I tried to use Ableton for effects or as a looper, but I wasn’t very satisfied with the result. I also have to MFC switches programmed to 2 random unused CCs, so I can control arbitrary functions in either AFX or Ableton, just in case, but in reality I’ve never used them. Just in case I forget to turn it on in Ableton itself. Any single midi message can trigger as many keystrokes as you like, in order. Finally, the midi signal from 2x2 might be wrong, so hit the midi switch in Live, highlight a mute track button then press the midi function youre using via the 2x2, the number that appears will be the number you need.
Oh, and another one controls the metronome. midiStroke converts midi note, program or CC messages into keystrokes. you might want to check to see if the o and p are in uppercase in midistroke, Lives key settings are case sensitive. One is mapped to Scene Up, another to Scene Down. One toggles playback (it has different CCs assigned to ON and OFF states, which are mapped to Play all and Stop all clips in Ableton). When all scenes within a song have finished playing, the next one is selected and playback stops.Īnyhow, to control all that I mainly use three buttons on my MFC. I also use a Max for Live device called Follow Scene to automate the flow between scenes if several of them are part of a song. The gigs are programmed in the Session view where each section of a song is a Scene. Also, it controls presets/scenes/loopers in other devices we use including the Axe FXs. I personally use it this way - Ableton is tempo source for all our gear, and it is used for playback. It’s hard to recommend something without knowing what exactly you want to achieve.

I know that ten IA's devoted to ableton may be too many for some, but my patch and effect switching needs are modest these days so five presets + five fx IA's is plenty for me. The separate tap tempo button for live is because live wants momentary and axe-fx wants toggle switch type (live reads double what the axe reads) if anybody knows a workaround for that please let me know. i also have direct monitoring enabled on my audio interface. see image for how i have the tracks setup in live. IA13 (cut) effectively doubles as a delete button. This configuration leaves me IA's 6-10 and 16-17 for standard fx switching/tempo/tuner on the axe and allows me to loop/rearrange/merge clips in live's session view with my feet. IA15 - 8 (mapped to tap tempo button in live) IA12 - 0 (mapped to metronome button in live) midiStroke keystroke mapping is as follows: Mfc-101 IA's 1-5 (reveal) and 11-15 set to general use/momentary switch type sending default cc messages to midiStroke which converts those cc midi messages to keystrokes. this setup is geared more towards composition and experimentation than live performance. I setup my first midi foot control of ableton live with the mfc-101 over the weekend and it's working pretty good.
